Pikes Peak New Horizons Band

The Pikes Peak New Horizons Band is made up of two unique local bands, the Gold Concert Band and the Swingmasters Jazz Band, both under the direction of long time musician Bill Callen. Mr. Callen holds an M.A. in Music Education. He served in the U.S. Army 5th Division Band for 3 years; was a middle-school band educator for 30 years and a church choir director for 25 years. Both of these bands are part of the New Horizons International Music Association. During Nazarene Bible Colleges fall and winter terms, the Pikes Peak New Horizons Bands meet and practice on the campus of NBC in the Strickland Chapel and Conference Center. These bands perform music written by musicians with intermediate to advanced playing abilities. For adults with limited experience or who would like to learn an instrument, special arrangements can be made so that each student receives personal attention. The Pikes Peak New Horizons Band participates at NBC's graduation, performs at special events throughout the year, and presents a spring and fall concert each year. New band members are welcome at any time, regardless of experience level, so if you're looking for a band please feel free to contact Bill Callen for further information.

The Pikes Peak New Horizons Gold Concert Band began in September 2002. It was created for those 40 years of age or older who would like to learn to play an instrument even if they have never played before, would like to continue playing their band instrument, or would like to re-learn an instrument they played years ago. Playing an instrument in your older age has been said to help keep you sharp and keep your brain functioning well. The choice is yours, it is never too late to join a band. Our talented team is here to help and encourage you every step of the way.

The Swingmasters Jazz Band began in 2003 for members of the Gold Band who were interested in learning to play "big band" jazz. Big band jazz is a style of music that became popular during the Swing Era from the early 1930s to the late 1940s. A Jazz "big band" normally consists of 12 to 25 musicians who play saxophones, trumpets, trombones, and rhythm instruments. The Swingmasters have played at the Antlers Hotel, the Al Kaly Shrine Club, the Hancock Senior Center, the Pioneer Museum, and other local community events.
