SPE1003 - Principles of Public Speaking

Course Description

An introductory study of oral communication skills necessary to improve one's ability to prepare and deliver effective oral presentations before an audience. This course emphasizes skills in organization, audience analysis and adaptation, nonverbal communication, and listening through the preparation, delivery, and evaluation of speeches in class. A study of voice production identifies potential problems and corrective measures. Prerequisite: English Composition I.

Course Objectives

The primary goal of this course is to become a better public speaker, with improved skills in researching, organizing, developing, and delivering speeches.

As a result of this course you should be able to:

  • Understand the process of human communication as an interactive and dynamic force
  • Develop a sense of ethical responsibility as a public speaker
  • Understand and manage communication anxiety
  • Discover, explore, and refine a topic to fit a specific purpose, occasion, and audience
  • Implement appropriate organizational strategies in the construction of a message
  • Understand the power of words and use language effectively
  • Develop effective vocal and physical delivery techniques
  • Identify your own strengths and weaknesses as a public speaker
  • Improve critical listening skills

The following competencies as outlined in the Sourcebook for Ministerial Development to meet the educational requirements for ordination within the Church of the Nazarene will be achieved by completing this course:

  • Ability to communicate publicly through multiple methods (oral, written, media, etc.) with clarity and creativity for the sake of fostering meaning. (CP-1)
  • Ability to speak coherently and cogently in the modes of discourse appropriate for the various ministry contexts. (CP-3)
  • Ability to preach evangelistically and to be engaged with and equip others in personal and congregational evangelism. (CP-16)
