THE4604 - Counseling and Christian Thought

Course Description

A course intended to provide the student with Christian theological foundations for counseling, including an understanding of how spirituality, religion, and psychology intersect.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Explain the role of theology and spirituality in counseling.
  2. Describe and implement the major patterns of psychological and spiritual healing.
  3. Conduct ongoing theological and spiritual assessment in the counseling process.
  4. Make appropriate decisions regarding the forms of prayer and scripture that should be used in specific counseling circumstances.
  5. Make appropriate decisions regarding which clients to confront with their sin and how to conduct this confrontation.
  6. Make appropriate decisions regarding the use OF confession in the counseling process.
  7. Use a balance of psychological, theological, and spiritual principles to cultivate an appropriate sense of forgiveness in clients.
  8. Model a personal experience of Christian redemption in the counseling environment and address issues of personal redemption appropriately with Christian and non-Christian clients.

For Christian Counseling majors only.
