OTR4013 - Developing a Missional Church
A study of the principles and strategies required to develop a healthy congregation that fulfills the great commission as a missionary church within our diverse cultural context. Prerequisite: Introduction to Christian Service.
The following intended learning outcomes will be achieved by this course:
- The student will be able to demonstrate by discussion and dialogue a basic understanding of the trends of modern culture and its impact on the church in the postmodern world.
- The student will be able to articulate the components that are evidenced in a missional church.
- The student will explore the differences between being a sending church and being a sent church, in the context of Mission USA/Canada, and the Wesleyan-Arminian tradition.
- The student will be able to explain possible options to be used in bringing the truth of the Gospel of Jesus Christ to address the trends of the relativistic, pluralistic society, and the individual caught up in that society.
The following competencies as outlined in the Sourcebook on Ordination: United States of America Edition, 2006 to meet the educational requirements for Ordination within the Church of the Nazarene will be achieved by completing this course:
- Ability to conceive and articulate purpose, mission, vision, and to develop strategic plans in ways that strengthen a unified vision. (CP-7)
- Ability to develop team building skills, identify and cultivate spiritual gifts, recruit volunteers, empower laity, diagnose and intervene in problems. (CP-8)
- Ability to lead the church in discipling & assimilating new converts into the church. (CP-17)
- Ability to identify social & congregational factors that influence church health and growth. (CP-18)
- Ability to discover sociological dynamics and trends and to apply that information to specific ministry settings. (CX-1)
- Ability to analyze & describe congregations & communities. (CX-2)
- Ability to explain the operational culture. (CX-4)
- Ability to identify and apply the principles of cross-cultural communications. (CX-7)
- Ability to apply historical analysis to the life of a local congregation in order to describe its historical and cultural context. (CX-9)
- Ability to develop and utilize existing ministry forms to compassionate ministry (such as community assessment, networking, ministry resource development, social programming, etc.) by which individuals, families, and congregations may be formed in the Christlikeness.
