NBC awards first G. Fred and Grace E. Bertolet Scholarships

McCool, general treasurer of the Church of the Nazarene, and Kenneth Roney, president of the Nazarene Foundation, recently visited Colorado Springs, Colorado, to make a presentation to Nazarene Bible College during the institution's annual Board of Trustees meeting.
Traditionally, the college president presents his annual report to the students, trustees, faculty, and staff in an evening chapel service during the trustees meeting. Prior to giving his report, NBC President Harold B. Graves Jr. introduced McCool. She and Roney then announced the establishment of the G. Fred and Grace E. Bertolet Endowed Scholarship for NBC students preparing for evangelism ministry. The endowment will provide annual scholarships for NBC students. The endowment is in the amount of $100,000.
In making the presentation, McCool spoke of the life and ministry of the Bertolets.
"The Church of the Nazarene is filled with generations of people who have given their lives to serve the church in many kinds of ministries around the globe," McCool said. "Some of these servants have also generously given back to their beloved church through planned designated gifts at the end of their earthly journey.
"The General Board was humbled to receive a sizable charitable gift annuity distribution from G. Fred and Grace E. Bertolet, song evangelists in the Church of the Nazarene. To honor the memory of their lives and service to the church, an endowment has been established in their name at the Church of the Nazarene Foundation for the benefit of NBC ministerial students pursuing evangelism ministries. Through this endowment, the Bertolets' sacrificial gift and legacy will live well into the future as those students continue to be equipped to reach others with the good news.
"Additionally, in honor of the Bertolets, we will be displaying a donor plaque in the Foundation Conference Room, as well as installing a small piece of art in one of the landscaped areas along the sidewalk leading to front entrance of the [denomination's] Global Ministry Center.
"The Bertolets spent their lives sharing the peace of the gospel. This will be a wonderful reminder to each of us to do the same as we enter the GMC doors to serve the Lord."
Following the announcement of the endowed scholarship, Roney and McCool presented the first two recipients of a scholarship that will be applied to the students' education this year. They are T. Shane Weaver, a sophomore student from Orange, Texas, and Chance Peter, a senior from The Sudan who came to NBC from Grand Rapids, Michigan.
