Recognition and Celebration

The word commencement is defined as:

  • an act or instance of commencing; beginning.
  • the ceremony of conferring degrees or granting diplomas at the end of the academic year.
  • The day on which this ceremony takes place.[1]

Nazarene Bible College has celebrated a commencement ceremony for 49 years, and this year was to be the 50th. One of the difficult decisions we had to make in the year of COVID-19 was canceling the Commencement Ceremony for the Class of 2020. Given the “stay-at-home” mandate, and the uncertainty of a reopening, the NBC Cabinet made the decision to invite the 2020 Class to be recognized for their accomplishments at the 2021 Commencement Ceremony.

This decision did not affect the granting of diplomas for those who have finished their certificates or degrees in 2020. We know the demands on our students and the perseverance it takes to complete their programs. This issue of The Torch recognizes our graduates and celebrates their accomplishments. We are proud of and thankful for you. We say to you, “well done.”

Hopefully, by the grace of God, we will celebrate you in 2021. I eagerly anticipate you holding the Torch and giving your vow to be “light” in our dark world.

Until then I pray, “The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace.” Numbers 6:24-26

NBC President Harold B. Graves Jr.
