Torch Ceremony Continues

The Torch Ceremony has been a tradition at Nazarene Bible College since the first commencement in 1970. It was an integral part of the Convocation Service along with the Call of the Apostles. For the first time, the Torch Ceremony was included in the NBC Commencement Service.

Academic Dean, Dr. Alan Lyke, read scripture about this light. Isaiah 60:1 says, “Arise, shine, for your light has come…” David in Psalm 27 writes about the Lord being “our light and salvation; whom shall we fear?” Those at Commencement were reminded that “God is light and in him is no darkness at all.” (1 John 1:5) Jesus said of himself, “I am the light of the world.” (John 8:12) Then, the key verse that the graduates promise to live out is “You are the light of the world…let your light shine…” (Matthew 5:14-16)

The torch was passed from NBC Alumnus, Rev. Gordon Smith, class of 2006. Rev. Smith currently serves as Lead Pastor of La Junta Church of the Nazarene. He represented thousands of NBC alumni who have carried the light of the Gospel to the world. A charge was given to fulfill the Great Commission of Jesus Christ to share the Gospel with a lost world.

Rev. Smith then passed the torch to the graduates who shared their personal commitment to share the light of the Gospel with a hurting world.
