Freedom in Christ

The Truth Shall Make You Free

“…Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (John 8:31-32)

No doubt. You can be free. That’s simple. But people complicate things. Intellectuals refer you to the truth in a syllogism, thinking that by the workings of reason, the mind, logic, and correctly arranged ideas, they may somehow arrive at some kind of freedom. Notwithstanding, my freedom is based on Jesus, not on a syllogism. Some others rely on societal structures, government regulations, behavioral sciences, financial success, and an infinity of other things, including their own personal emotions. Although such categories offer comfort and security for some, at least temporarily, I soon discovered that real, genuine, freedom is found deep in a person’s heart when they surrender and commit their lives to God.

My idea of freedom is such that it requires a Supreme being, God, who has the authority to give it to you. This is spiritual freedom - freedom from the inside out - all others are relative and subjective. Just as a millionaire can say that he is financially free because he has money to spare, so can a person with modest means argue that he is financially free, because he has all that he needs.

That’s why I believe in Bible truth. It is based on absolute principles, because it is derived from a God that is absolute, with the absolute authority to set you free indeed. That happens when you recognize His authority and submit to Him. Does this sound contradictory? Well, it is not. It is rather wonderful. Your eyes are opened, your heart rejoices, and your mind is really cleared. Recognizing and submitting to His authority is a life changing experience. It transforms your way of thinking, and you see the world in a whole different way.

I thank God for great men that labor and sacrifice themselves for the cause of liberty and freedom, but there’s none other than Christ who sets you free. He is the truth. Are you free? Have you asked God to give you this freedom?
