Jesus Said Come Follow Me
Jesus Said Come Follow Me

Being a Part of Jesus' Team

Nazarene Bible College President, Scott Sherwood, was the NBC Chapel speaker on July 7, 2021. His message was about being thankful to be on the NBC team. He shared about how all through junior and senior high, he tried out for the basketball team and never made it. He tried hard, he worked hard, was equipment manager, but never got to play on the team. It means something to him to be a part of a team.

Dr. Sherwood testified that Jesus called him to do something that mattered. He was invited to be on Jesus’ team. Jesus asked him to accomplish His purposes. Then, God chose him to be on this NBC team.

In Matthew 4, we see that Jesus formed a team. He invited people to be “fishers of men.” (v. 18)

“From that time on Jesus began to preach, Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near. As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” At once they left their nets and followed him.” (Matthew 4: 17-19)

These men were called to mission. They were called to repentance and then to follow Him. They left their boats, their father, and their professions. This sounds a lot like the students of NBC. From the beginnings of NBC in 1967, men and women were saved and called, and said yes to Jesus. They left their job, packed up their car and family, and came to study and prepare at NBC. They are still doing that today, although, they get to stay in their place of ministry, and study online.

Those who work at NBC, the faculty, the administrators and staff, know that there are people in heaven today because of what they are doing at NBC. This team is called to God’s mission. As the purpose of the college reads, “Nazarene Bible College exists to glorify Jesus Christ as Lord by preparing adults to evangelize, disciple, and minister to the world.”

God chose you to be on this NBC team. Dr. Sherwood said that if he died broke but happy, being all sold out to the same team as Jesus, this is how he wanted to live. What we do at NBC matters.
