THE4011 - Theology and Therapy I: An Integration

Course Description

The objective of this course is to ensure that doctrinal beliefs provide foundations for counseling approaches, that Scripture vitally impacts both diagnosis and treatment plans, and that the dynamic power of the Holy Spirit does indeed impact the counseling process, providing true healing. The relationship between spirituality and psychology will be reviewed. For Christian Counseling majors only.

Course Objectives

The following learning objectives will be achieved by this course:

  1. To gain a deeper appreciation of the integration of traditional ministry and processes of psychological/Biblical counseling in implementing healing--emotionally, relationally, spiritually, and even physically.
  2. To find both the correlations and potential points of dynamic interaction between spiritual health and emotional/physical health.
  3. To become more capable of self-awareness, self-diagnosis, and self-intervention in your own life.
  4. To learn new and effective ways of using doctrinal beliefs and Scripture in both diagnosis and treatment.
  5. To learn the language of soul care, including dreams and the unconscious.
  6. To learn new and useful techniques in both receiving and giving Christian soul care.
  7. To learn how to determine with some meaningful degree of effectiveness whether the cause of emotional unrest is primarily internal or external.
  8. To learn concrete ways to synthesize Scriptural and theological truths that incorporate holiness doctrine and experience (wholeness) with counseling tasks.
