EDU2016 - Methods in Early Education

Course Description

A course designed to provide an overview of early education teaching methods including children’s development, teaching strategies, establishing environments, working with families, managing classrooms, and professional development. This course may be fulfilled through verification of the completion of the coursework for the Child Development Associates (CDA).

Course Objectives

  1. Identify the historical roots of early childhood education (ECE). (ACSI Standard 3)
  2. Define developmentally appropriate practices in early childhood programs. (ACSI Standard 5)
  3. Demonstrate an awareness of developmental ages and stages, and recognize the major developmental milestones. (ACSI Standard 5)
  4. Compare theoretical perspectives that relate to child development. (ACSI Standard
  5. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the ethical standards of the early childhood profession. (ACSI Standard 4)
  6. Define the key elements and purposes of observation. (ACSI Standard 5)
  7. Examine effective guidance strategies that promote positive interactions, social learning, and problem-solving skills. (ACSI Standard 6)
  8. Identify strategies that promote strong partnerships between families, schools, and communities. (ACSI Standard 3)
  9. Outline the major criteria that are used in creating a developmentally appropriate learning environment. (ACSI Standard 6)
  10. Demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between a play-based curriculum and the development of skills, knowledge and learning. (ACSI Standard 5)
