Course Description

Methods of language arts applied across the curriculum in upper elementary grades. Topics include: integrated approaches, listening, speaking, reading, writing, and literature response.

Course Objectives

The following outcomes will be achieved by this course:

  1. Identify the content areas of language arts.
  2. Distinguish between contextualized and direct instruction methods for grammar instruction.
  3. Identify attitudes about and issues in integrating the language arts.
  4. Identify developmental concepts related to listening and speaking.
  5. Identify listening and speaking skills and appropriate methods for teaching those skills.
  6. Distinguish between types of listening and speaking.
  7. Evaluate spelling programs on the basis of effective instruction.
  8. Identify key influences on the English language.
  9. Identify effective strategies for vocabulary development.
  10. Explore the relationship between language study and vocabulary development.
  11. Identify trends and issues in teaching handwriting.
  12. Identify methods and resources for teaching personal writing.
  13. Explore the role of technology in teaching the language arts.
  14. Demonstrate an understanding of the role of integration in teaching the language arts.
  15. Explore the role of students' first language in developing competency in the language arts.
