CEM3133 - Adult Ministries
A study of adulthood, the theological and theoretical foundations of education ministry to adults, contemporary Christian educational needs of adults, and programs designed to meet those needs.
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to -
- Express a clear understanding and appreciation of the need for and role of effective Christian educational ministries to adults in the church and its broader community so as to support adult educational programs through his or her own ministry
- Identify and describe biblical and theoretical foundations of effective ministry to adults, develop a personal philosophy of adult ministry that agrees with and incorporates these foundations, and exercise the skills necessary to lead a local church in applying these foundations in its ministry programs
- Describe the developmental dynamics of adults, contemporary adult culture, the resulting ministry issues and needs of adults, and exercise the skills to lead a local church in effectively addressing these issues and needs
- Identify contemporary ministry programs, organizations, and resources for adult ministry and exercise the skills to utilize these effectively in the development of a local church ministry to adults
- Identify and describe principles and practices of effective leadership and administration of adult ministries and exercise the skills to apply these in local church ministry to adults
The following are competencies for Ministry as outlined in the Sourcebook for Ministerial Development that will be addressed in this course:
- Ability to discern sociological dynamics, (including the power dynamics of gender, age and ethnicity) and to apply that information to specific ministry settings. (CX3)
- Ability to envision, order, and participate in contextualized, theologically grounded worship and to develop and lead appropriate services for special occasions (i.e. wedding, funeral, baptism, and Lord's Supper). (CP11)
- Ability to prepare and lead discipleship ministries that are biblically sound, age-appropriate, intergenerational, and culturally sensitive. (CP15)
